Reviewing the APIdays Strategy Agenda

Posted by Saul Caganoff on 11 September 2020

APIs, platforms, strategy, Open Banking, APIdays, open data, ethics

APIdays Australia LIVE is happening next week on September 15th and 16th. Registration to this online event is free and open now at: https://apidays.co/australia.

Previously we talked about the overall event structure which - in addition to our invited keynotes - is split into three streams:

  • Strategy: the business and strategy of APIs,
  • Execution: the technical details of API protocols, management and security.
  • Platforms: the back-end architecture providing all the "ilities".

The Strategy stream is where we look at broad societal, organisational and business concerns around APIs as well as host a range of fascinating case-studies from our local community and overseas.

Platforms and Ecosystems

Starting with APIs as they relate to platforms and business ecosystems, we kick off with Alan Glickenouse (IBM) on ecosystems and eventually book-end with Erik Wilde (Axway) on the platform economy. Along the way we hear from Claire Barrett on building the right API team for your organisation as well as Liz Douglass (Deloitte) and myself on growing the right kind of API culture.

Open Banking, Open Data & CDR

Possibly the biggest thing happening in the API world is the advent of open banking which brings the power of APIs to banks, Fintechs and their customers all over the world. In Australia there's a bigger "open data" picture that starts with banking and extends via the Consumer Data Right (CDR) to many other areas of our economy. To navigate this landscape we are guided by James Bligh (RedCrew) to reflect on the development of the CDR standards. Jeremy Glassenberg (Deserve) brings his considerable experience of platforms and APIs to bear on Fintech APIs and Travis Kane (Sonrai) leads of panel of energy industry experts on how CDR will shake up Australia's energy market. More broadly than CDR and Fintech, we have Hendrik Wolff (Simon Fraser University) on open data in mobility services and Janet Liao (Talend) ensures our data is high quality before we make it open.

Day 2

Technology Ethics

But with open data comes great responsibility and we need to think about the ethics of the systems we enable. If you can build it, should you? Guiding us through this maze of technology ethics is Anand Tamboli (author & futurist) and Daniele Bernardi (Twitter).

Case-studies and COVID-19

One of the most exciting things about APIdays is getting a look at how other people are using APIs and we have plenty of case-studies from Australia and overseas. You've probably heard of COVID-19 and we have examples of how organisations have responded to this huge challenge from Tim Eckersley (NSW Health Pathology) as well as Matt McLarty & Sanjna Verma (MuleSoft). Sirin Akbas and her team take us through their API programme at IAG and Maria Garcia describes how she built an enterprise API programme at Amadeus. David Julia & Venkatesh Arunachalam (VMWare) talk about their experience with a complex payments service while Bear Douglas gives us a peek at how Slack builds their own APIs and workflows. Finally we have founders of two local companies who are building their businesses around APIs with Dr Omaru Maruatona (Aiculus) and Iwan Cornelius (Amentum Aerospace) - both with cutting edge use-cases to share.
